Picoprep Instructions

Preparing with Picoprep

Purchase 1 box (3 sachets) of Picoprep from the Chemist. Please follow these instructions and not those on the pack.

Routine medications for blood pressure and heart conditions can be taken on the morning of the procedure.

Please let the doctor/secretary know if you are on diabetic medication or blood thinners (eg Warfarin, Plavix etc) well before the procedure.

The hospital will call you between 3 - 7pm the working day before the procedure to advise time of admission.

3 DAYS BEFORE COLONOSCOPY - DO NOT EAT ANYTHING WITH SKIN, SEEDS, NUTS OR GRAINS .

You can eat things like:

White bread (no whole seeds), pita/turkish bread, english muffins, cornflakes, rice bubbles, lean meat eg. beef, pork, lamb, veal or chicken, fish, peeled fruit, peeled vegetables (no beetroot), roasted peeled potato, mash potato, hot chips, crackers (no seeds e.g. Sao or Jatz), eggs, butter/margarine, Vegemite, Promite, Marmite, cheese, custard, ice-cream, chocolate (avoid bars containing nuts)

Do not eat anything which has skins, seeds, nuts or grains:

Corn, peas, strawberries, jams, wholegrain bread, cereals, onion, muesli, muesli bars, any nuts or food containing nuts, skin on apple, pear, peach or nectarine (peeled fruit is okay), marmalades with skins, citrus fruit, grapes, tomato skin or seeds, sundried tomato, skin on capsicum, eggplant or potato (peeled vegetables are okay), legumes eg. baked beans or kidney beans, mustard, sultanas and raisins, brown rice, casseroles containing vegetables, lentils, barley, split peas, coconut, sesame, sunflower or poppy seeds, fruit yoghurt, fibre supplement.

For a Morning Procedure

The day prior to procedure - Take approved clear fluids only - NO solid food

Drink plenty of clear fluids all day including black tea, black coffee, herbal teas, water, cordials, ginger ale, lemonade, clear fruit juices (no pulp), clear soups and broths (strained), jelly, electrolyte sports drinks (Gatorade/Powerade/Hydrolyte). Please avoid red, green, purple or blue coloured ice blocks, jellies and drinks.

Picoprep Schedule for Morning Procedures:

1pm - Dissolve contents of one Picoprep sachet in 250m1 of warm water, cooled in refrigerator and drink. Follow with 4 or more glasses of approved clear fluids

4pm - Dissolve contents of one Picoprep sachet in 250m1 of warm water, cooled in refrigerator and drink. Follow with 4 or more glasses of approved clear fluids

8pm - Dissolve contents of one Picoprep sachet in 250m1 of warm water, cooled in refrigerator and drink. Follow with 4 or more glasses of approved clear fluids

Continue clear fluids up until bedtime.

The day of procedure

Take routine medications with water and strictly nil by mouth for 2 hours prior to admission.

For an Afternoon Procedure

The day prior to procedure - Take approved clear fluids only after a light breakfast (by 7am)- NO solid food

Drink plenty of clear fluids all day including black tea, black coffee, herbal teas, water, cordials, ginger ale, lemonade, clear fruit juices (no pulp), clear soups and broths (strained), jelly, electrolyte sports drinks (Gatorade/Powerade/Hydrolyte). Please avoid red, green, purple or blue coloured ice blocks, jellies and drinks.

Picoprep Schedule for Afternoon Procedures:

4pm - Dissolve contents of one Picoprep sachet in 250m1 of warm water, cooled in refrigerator and drink. Follow with 4 or more glasses of approved clear fluids

8pm - Dissolve contents of one Picoprep sachet in 250m1 of warm water, cooled in refrigerator and drink. Follow with 4 or more glasses of approved clear fluids

Continue clear fluids up until bedtime.

The day of procedure

6am - Dissolve contents of one Picoprep sachet in 250m1 of warm water, cooled in refrigerator and drink. Follow with 4 or more glasses of approved clear fluids

Take routine medications with water and strictly nil by mouth for 2 hours prior to admission.
