The practice was established by Clinical Associate Professor Brian Jones in Hornsby in 1986. Prof. Jones was subsequently joined by Dr Avelyn Kwok and Dr Thao Lam prior to the relocation of the practice to the Sydney Adventist Hospital campus in 2015. In 2016 Dr Saurabh Gupta relocated from Brisbane to Sydney and joined the practice. All four gastroenterologists have an affiliation with the University of Sydney through the Clinical Schools at the Sydney Adventist, Concord and Westmead Hospitals.

The practice provides a consultative and procedural gastroenterology service to the upper North Shore and North West suburbs of Sydney, although patient referrals are broad and include the Central Coast as well as regional and rural New South Wales.

Northern Suburbs Gastroenterology is committed to provision of a quality consultative practice in gastroenterology and liver disease. As well as providing a general gastroenterology service in an efficient and caring manner as possible, Northern Suburbs Gastroenterology has particular expertise in liver disease and advanced endoscopic procedures such as Endoscopic Ultrasound and Capsule Endoscopy.
